Both contain a constituent called arbutin, which supports the health of the urinary tract.* Plant extracts such as rosemary extract and resveratrol, and minerals such as zinc and selenium, have powerful antioxidant activity that can protect cells from free radical damage.*

Prostate Health

As a young man, you probably didn't think about your prostate much. But as you get older, it may become impossible to ignore. About the size of a walnut, your prostate gland wraps around your urethra, the tube that carries urine from your bladder and out of your body. With age, your prostate can constrict your urethra, making urination difficult or uncomfortable.*

The most important thing you can do to support the health of your prostate is to maintain a normal prostate size, which encourages a healthy urinary flow. Prostazol does that and more, including providing protection to prostate cells, supporting a healthy response to inflammation, acting as a tonic for the male reproductive system, and preventing free radical damage.*

1. Urinary Flow Support
Beta-sitosterol, flower pollen, pumpkin seed, saw palmetto, pygeum and stinging nettle have all been well-documented through human clinical trials to maintain normal prostate size and support a healthy urinary flow.*

Beta sitosterol is a plant compound that resembles human cholesterol in structure, so it competes with cholesterol for absorption.* Agents that help maintain healthy cholesterol levels have also been used to support prostate health. Three double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have found beta-sitosterol effective for improving urine flow rate in men.* (1)

Pollen extracts have successfully been used to support prostate health.* In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, over two-thirds of men who took pollen extract were able to reduce their nightly trips to the bathroom, compared to just 37 percent of those taking placebo.* (2) Pollen extract also reduced incomplete emptying.* Another double-blind, placebo-controlled trial yielded similar results, with the added benefit of maintaining normal prostate size.* (3)

Pumpkin seed has been approved by the German Commission E, a government regulatory agency that evaluates the safety and efficacy of herbs, for supporting bladder and prostate health.* (4) A multi-center human clinical trial found that not only did pumpkin seed improve parameters of urological health, it also improved quality of life.* (5) Additionally, two human studies testing the effects of pumpkin seed plus saw palmetto found the combination improved urinary flow, urination time, frequency of urination and incomplete emptying.* (6,7)

Saw palmetto berry extract is probably the most well-researched herb available for promoting prostate health.* A meta-analysis of 14 randomized clinical trials and three open-label trials of saw palmetto extract showed a significant improvement in peak urinary flow rate and reduction in the amount of nightly trips to the bathroom compared to placebo.* (8)

Pygeum is a South African herb traditionally used to support urinary health.* Its research portfolio is nearly as impressive as saw palmetto's, having been the subject of 17 double-blind human studies. The cumulative results of these trials have proven that pygeum reduces nighttime urination, peak urine flow and incomplete emptying.* Men who received pygeum were twice as likely to report an improvement in urological health as men taking placebo.* (9)

Stinging nettle has been the subject of several clinical trials investigating its effects on prostate health.* (10,11,12,13,14) The largest study - a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial - enrolled 620 men and lasted for six months. At the end of the treatment period, 81 percent of the men taking stinging nettle reported improvements in urological parameters, compared to just 16 percent of those in the placebo group.* Of particular note, stinging nettle significantly improved peak urine flow rate and incomplete emptying.* (11)

2. Prostate Protection
Population studies have linked consumption of green tea, lycopene, soy isoflavones and boron with improved prostate health, indicating these ingredients are all protective of prostate cells.*

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is made from the same plant as black tea; however, because it is less processed, it retains higher levels of active constituents. A very large study of nearly 50,000 Japanese men aged 40-69 found that those who drank five or more cups of green tea per day were significantly more likely to enjoy prostate health than those drinking less than one cup per day.* (15) Other population studies have yielded similar results.* (16) An intervention study, in which men were administered either green tea capsules or placebo, provides further evidence that green tea protects prostate cells.* (17)

Lycopene - the bright red antioxidant pigment present in tomatoes, watermelon and papaya - is an effective quencher of free radicals, including singlet oxygen and peroxyl radicals.* (18) It has long been observed that Italian men enjoy excellent prostate health, which may be explained by the fact that they eat so much lycopene-rich tomato sauce.* A population study measured blood levels of lycopene in over 400 American men. There was a definite correlation between high levels of lycopene and prostate health.* (19) A much larger study, which followed nearly 50,000 men for 12 years, confirmed a correlation between frequent consumption of tomato products and prostate health. (20) Intervention studies have also found that lycopene supplements support healthy PSA levels.* (21,22)

Soy isoflavones and red clover extract both contain active constituents called isoflavones. Isoflavones are phytoestrogenic, meaning they closely resemble human estrogen in structure. As selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERM), isoflavones can play the role of either an estrogen agonist or an estrogen antagonist, depending on what the body requires at the time.* By exerting anti-estrogenic effects, soy isoflavones may offer protection to hormone-sensitive tissues, such as the prostate.*

A recently published meta-analysis, which pooled the results of two cohort and six case-control studies, examined the influence of soy products on prostate health. The results indicated that men who frequently consumed soy were significantly more likely to experience prostate health than those who rarely did.* (23)

Boron is an essential trace mineral naturally present in fruits and vegetables. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey uncovered a significant relationship between boron consumption and prostate health.* After comparing the diets of nearly 9,000 subjects, the researchers concluded that men in the highest quartile of boron intake experienced a significant protective effect from the mineral compared to men in the lowest quartile.* (24)

While beta glucan, a chain of polysaccharides (complex sugar molecules), has not been subjected to human clinical trials, animal research has shown it has prostate-protective activity.* (25) Beta glucan has been demonstrated in laboratory research to induce the activity of certain white blood cells and to inactivate the potentially harmful enzyme glyoxalase I in prostate cells.* (26,27)

3. Healthy Inflammation Response
Numerous botanical ingredients, such as ginger, boswellia, myrrh gum and quercetin, have been shown through laboratory research to support a healthy response to inflammation.*

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been shown through in vitro research to inhibit inflammatory and pain-causing enzymes, including cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX).* (27) It also "turns off" certain genes that are involved in the inflammatory response.* (28) A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study has confirmed that ginger supports a healthy response to inflammation.* (29)

Like ginger, the Ayurvedic herb boswellia has been demonstrated to inhibit the inflammatory enzyme 5-LOX in vitro.* (30,31,32) Some men over-express 5-LOX in prostate tissue, and reducing levels of 5-LOX has been shown through laboratory research to benefit prostate health.* (33,34)

Myrrh gum, the dried resin of the Commiphora myrrha tree, has demonstrated a positive response to inflammation in an animal model.* (35)

Quercetin is an antioxidant found in onions, apples and red wine. A preliminary randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 30 men found that quercetin significantly reduced prostate discomfort compared to placebo.* Whereas only 20 percent of patients taking placebo experienced a reduction of at least 25 percent, 67 percent taking quercetin did.* (36)

4. Male Reproductive Tonics
Damiana and uva ursi are herbs traditionally used as tonics for the male reproductive system. Both contain a constituent called arbutin, which supports the health of the urinary tract.* Uva ursi has been approved by the German Commission E for this purpose.* (37)

5. Antioxidants
When the amount of free radicals in cells exceeds the amount of antioxidants, oxidative damage can occur to DNA, RNA, proteins and cell membranes. Plant extracts such as rosemary extract and resveratrol, and minerals such as zinc and selenium, have powerful antioxidant activity that can protect cells from free radical damage.*

Rosemary extract has demonstrated strong antioxidant activity due to its content of antioxidative factors including flavonoids and phenols.* (38,39)

Resveratrol is a phytochemical present in grapes and red wine. Laboratory research has indicated resveratrol targets distinct pathways to protect prostate cells from harm.* (40)

The trace element zinc is one of the essential minerals in the human diet. Necessary for the production of sex hormones, zinc plays an important role in male reproductive function.* (41) In men, zinc is highly concentrated in the prostate gland.* (42)

Selenium is a key component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, part of the body's antioxidant defense system.* A large placebo-controlled study conducted by the University of Arizona found that selenium supplementation profoundly impacted prostate health.* (43)
