Cholesterol
It’s important to maintain healthy levels of cholesterol — total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL, LDL (“bad”) cholesterol less than 100 mg/dL, and HDL (“good”) cholesterol more than 60 mg/dL — in order to keep your arteries clear and flexible.

Several human studies have found that flaxseed oil helps maintain cholesterol levels already within a healthy range.* (1)

Blood Pressure
Maintaining healthy blood pressure is important to cardiovascular health, because when blood pressure is too high, it puts undue stress on the heart.

A recent two-group, parallel-arm human clinical study tested the effects of flaxseed oil on blood pressure. The first group took flaxseed oil, providing a large dose of LNA (8 grams per day) for 12 weeks, while the second group, acting as controls, took safflower oil. At the end of the study period, those taking the flaxseed oil were able to maintain blood pressure levels (both systolic and diastolic) already within a healthy range.* (2)

Cardio-protection
It’s well-established that the Omega-3 fatty acid EPA (found in fish) has powerful cardio-protective properties. If the body can convert LNA — the Omega-3 fatty acid in flaxseed oil — into EPA, it would make sense that supplementing with LNA would also confer protection to the heart.

A randomized, double-blind human clinical study was conducted to see if LNA supplementation increases levels of EPA in the blood. Half of the participants were given 3 grams of LNA per day from flaxseed oil; the other half received a placebo (olive oil). After 12 weeks, blood levels of EPA in the flaxseed oil group increased an impressive 60 percent, showing that LNA provides an effective way to get the cardio-protective benefits of EPA.* (3)

This finding is in keeping with a large population study, which followed over 76,000 women for ten years. The researchers discovered that women who had a higher dietary intake of LNA were more likely to have healthy hearts at the end of the study than those who had the lowest intake.* (4) The most likely explanation is that eating high amounts of LNA leads to high blood levels of EPA.

Mental focus
Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to be important for the health of the brain. There is some speculation that people who have difficulty focusing may be deficient in Omega-3s.

A pilot study tested the effects of administering LNA-rich flaxseed oil on children who had difficulty focusing. Blood fat analysis showed that the level of fatty acids in the children’s red blood cells were significantly higher after the flaxseed oil treatment. Additionally, they were better able to focus and pay attention.* (5)

Skin
Can taking flaxseed and borage oil improve the health of your skin? A new study says yes.

The placebo-controlled human clinical trial divided participants into three groups. One group of women took flaxseed oil, one group took borage oil, and another group took placebo oil. After 12 weeks, ladies in both the flaxseed and borage oil groups got excellent results. Skin hydration was increased, and skin reddening, water loss, and roughness and scaling were decreased.* Except for hydration, none of the other markers of skin health were changed in the placebo group.
